About Our Services in Winnetka
Winnetka combines the two hardest things about North Shore exterior work: large historic homes and difficult ground.
East of Sheridan Road the lots run toward the bluff, and the lake facing elevation of a Winnetka home is often two full stories higher than the street side with a slope rather than a lawn at its base. There is no safe ladder position on that side of many of these houses, so we work it with rope access for windows, gutters and roof cleaning.
The homes themselves are mostly early twentieth century: leaded and divided light glass, slate and cedar roofs, copper gutters, painted wood trim. All of that gets hand work and low pressure. A pressure washer on slate, cedar or century old mortar does damage that costs more to repair than the cleaning ever cost.
Hubbard Woods and Indian Hill add the canopy problem. The mature oaks and elms through those neighborhoods put enough material into the gutters that two cleanings a year is the floor, and homes with limbs directly over the roof are better on three. We check the full downspout run and any underground drain, because on these properties an overflow stains stone and brick that is not cheap to clean afterward.

Winnetka Exterior Cleaning FAQs
Can you reach the lake side of a bluff property?
Yes. On East Winnetka bluff lots the lake facing elevation typically has no stable ground for a ladder, so we work it from anchored rope. Windows, gutters and roof soft washing are all within reach that way.
Do you clean leaded glass and divided light windows?
Yes, by hand. Leaded came and true divided light glazing are cleaned carefully and without aggressive scraping, and we work around putty and painted sashes rather than through them.
How often do Hubbard Woods and Indian Hill homes need gutters cleaned?
Twice a year at minimum given the oak and elm canopy through those neighborhoods, and three times where limbs sit directly over the roofline.
Is pressure washing safe on a historic Winnetka home?
No, and we do not do it. Slate, cedar, old brick and century old mortar all erode under high pressure. Everything on a home like that is soft washed at low pressure with a cleaning solution instead.
